Series II, Sitting Figure III is an original semi-abstract figurative painting by Denise Souza Finney, the third in a series of figure studies exploring pose, gesture, and surface through acrylic on gessoed cold press watercolor paper. Where the first series was painted on smooth hot press paper, this series was made on cold press — a rougher, more porous ground that absorbs the watered-down acrylic washes differently, pooling in the texture of the paper and creating a ground that feels warmer and more inhabited than the figure alone could account for.
The figure is built up with palette knife and paste medium, then worked with sgraffito through the surface to reveal the layers beneath, followed by successive acrylic washes that settle into the texture of both the paste and the paper. The warm amber and teal palette is shared with the companion Series I work, but reads differently here — drier, more granular, closer to earth.
The painting is presented in a substantial black wood frame with a warm gray mat, framed size 12×12 inches, painted image 6×6 inches. A companion piece from Series I — painted on smooth hot press paper — is listed separately.

About Original Artwork
Paint Media
Denise paints with archival quality acrylic paints including Golden Acrylic Paints and mediums as well as Nova Paints. There can be mixed media here and there such as charcoal, colored pencil and waxed crayon.
Substrate
Denise paints on cradled hardboard and gessoed canvas. Pieces that are 24x36 inches or smaller, are painted on cradled hardboard 1 inch to 1 1/2 inches deep with paint finished edges matching the overall color scheme of the painting.
Larger pieces on canvas are painted while tacked to a large hardboard frame. This way I can still sand away as much as I want with a hard surface backing the painting.
The painting is then removed and reframed on stretcher bars for a more lightweight finished artwork which is easier to ship and easier to hang.
Finish
All artwork have been finished with a clear gloss or semi gloss water-based acrylic polymer varnish with Ultra Violet Light Stabilizers [UVLS] that protects interior acrylic paintings from dust and ultraviolet light.
In the event that you hang your painting in the dining room and it get splattered with spaghetti sauce (believe me this can happen), the painting can be wiped clean to bring it back to it's intended design.
