Series I, Figure Kneeling is an original semi-abstract figurative painting by Denise Souza Finney, part of a series of small works exploring the figure through gesture and accumulated surface. The piece is built up using palette knives and paste medium to establish the form and texture of the figure, then worked with successive washes and applications of acrylic paint that settle into the texture, pulling the figure forward from the layered ground beneath.
The surface is gessoed hot press watercolor paper — smooth and tightly woven — which gives the washes a luminous, fluid quality distinct from canvas or board. No watercolor paint is used; the medium throughout is acrylic. The teal, gold, and warm earth palette grounds the figure in something between atmosphere and memory.
The painting is presented in a substantial black wood frame with a warm gray mat, framed size 12×12 inches, painted image 6×6 inches. A second work in a companion series — painted on cold press paper for a rougher, more textured ground — will be listed separately.

About Original Artwork
Paint Media
Denise paints with archival quality acrylic paints including Golden Acrylic Paints and mediums as well as Nova Paints. There can be mixed media here and there such as charcoal, colored pencil and waxed crayon.
Substrate
Denise paints on cradled hardboard and gessoed canvas. Pieces that are 24x36 inches or smaller, are painted on cradled hardboard 1 inch to 1 1/2 inches deep with paint finished edges matching the overall color scheme of the painting.
Larger pieces on canvas are painted while tacked to a large hardboard frame. This way I can still sand away as much as I want with a hard surface backing the painting.
The painting is then removed and reframed on stretcher bars for a more lightweight finished artwork which is easier to ship and easier to hang.
Finish
All artwork have been finished with a clear gloss or semi gloss water-based acrylic polymer varnish with Ultra Violet Light Stabilizers [UVLS] that protects interior acrylic paintings from dust and ultraviolet light.
In the event that you hang your painting in the dining room and it get splattered with spaghetti sauce (believe me this can happen), the painting can be wiped clean to bring it back to it's intended design.
Shipping
Original artwork is usually shipped within 3-7 days from an order being received either by UPS or Fed Ex.
All original artwork are shipped from my studio in the Pacific Northwest. Each piece is packaged with care for a safe journey to your home.
For original artwork valued over $300 US dollars a signature is required upon delivery.
