"Red Poppies in a Can — Fraise" fills the canvas with bold red and magenta poppies spilling from a vintage French strawberry preserve tin, its hand-lettered label and painted strawberries rendered with the same expressive brushwork as the blooms themselves. The poppies — deeply textured, their petals built up in sculptural layers of impasto — range from pure red to deep crimson-magenta, each center a small jewel of gold and sage green. Behind them, a soft aqua background layers warmth and cool in equal measure, with sgraffito marks and diagonal lines visible beneath the surface, and a golden glaze catching the light across the whole composition.
The pleasure in this painting is the collision of two kinds of beauty — the loose, gestural energy of the poppies against the precise charm of the vintage label. The "FRAISE" tin, with its painted strawberries and dark botanical border, is as carefully considered as any element in the composition. Both the flowers and the label are European in sensibility: unhurried, tactile, rooted in the pleasure of ordinary beautiful things. This is the second painting in a series pairing poppies with vintage European tins — each one a small celebration of the labels, brands, and domestic objects that carry a particular kind of cultural memory.

About Original Artwork
Paint Media
Denise paints with archival quality acrylic paints including Golden Acrylic Paints and mediums as well as Nova Paints. There can be mixed media here and there such as charcoal, colored pencil and waxed crayon.
Substrate
Denise paints on cradled hardboard and gessoed canvas. Pieces that are 24x36 inches or smaller, are painted on cradled hardboard 1 inch to 1 1/2 inches deep with paint finished edges matching the overall color scheme of the painting.
Larger pieces on canvas are painted while tacked to a large hardboard frame. This way I can still sand away as much as I want with a hard surface backing the painting.
The painting is then removed and reframed on stretcher bars for a more lightweight finished artwork which is easier to ship and easier to hang.
Finish
All artwork have been finished with a clear gloss or semi gloss water-based acrylic polymer varnish with Ultra Violet Light Stabilizers [UVLS] that protects interior acrylic paintings from dust and ultraviolet light.
In the event that you hang your painting in the dining room and it get splattered with spaghetti sauce (believe me this can happen), the painting can be wiped clean to bring it back to it's intended design.
