"Poppies in a Can — Nina I" pairs vivid orange poppies with a periwinkle-lavender background — the boldest color contrast in the series. The petals are piled up in thick impasto and edged in pale butter yellow, with open centers revealing cream and sage stamens. Plump green seed pods and buds hang from curving stems, some drooping well past the tin. Below, a vintage tomato tin in soft green carries a hand-lettered red "NINA" above a cluster of painted tomatoes.
The background is scraped and layered, with flashes of yellow and white breaking through the lavender like light moving across a wall. Orange against periwinkle keeps the whole painting bright without tipping into loud, and the label's red and green tie the tin back to the flowers. It belongs to a series pairing poppies with vintage tins and labels — the ordinary pantry objects that carry their own kind of memory.
Suited to kitchens, dining rooms, or a smaller wall where you want art that feels warm, personal, and alive.

About Original Artwork
Paint Media
Denise paints with archival quality acrylic paints including Golden Acrylic Paints and mediums as well as Nova Paints. There can be mixed media here and there such as charcoal, colored pencil and waxed crayon.
Substrate
Denise paints on cradled hardboard and gessoed canvas. Pieces that are 24x36 inches or smaller, are painted on cradled hardboard 1 inch to 1 1/2 inches deep with paint finished edges matching the overall color scheme of the painting.
Larger pieces on canvas are painted while tacked to a large hardboard frame. This way I can still sand away as much as I want with a hard surface backing the painting.
The painting is then removed and reframed on stretcher bars for a more lightweight finished artwork which is easier to ship and easier to hang.
Finish
All artwork have been finished with a clear gloss or semi gloss water-based acrylic polymer varnish with Ultra Violet Light Stabilizers [UVLS] that protects interior acrylic paintings from dust and ultraviolet light.
In the event that you hang your painting in the dining room and it get splattered with spaghetti sauce (believe me this can happen), the painting can be wiped clean to bring it back to it's intended design.
