"Poppies in a Can — Citron I" sets coral-red poppies against a warm apricot ground, spilling from a vintage French lemon tin. The petals are layered thick and then dry-brushed with white, so the surface reads both chalky and luminous, with dark centers tucked into the folds. Sage-green seed pods rise on looping stems between the blooms, and fine lines scratched into the peach background add movement without competing with the flowers. The tin's deep blue label — hand-lettered "CITRON" above a painted lemon and leaves — gives the composition its one cool note.

The pull in this painting is coral against blue: some of the warmest flowers in the series sitting on its coolest label. Both the poppies and the tin are European in sensibility — unhurried, tactile, rooted in the pleasure of ordinary beautiful things. It belongs to a series pairing poppies with vintage tins and labels, each one a small celebration of the domestic objects that carry a particular kind of cultural memory.

About Original Artwork

Paint Media

Denise paints with archival quality acrylic paints including Golden Acrylic Paints and mediums as well as Nova Paints. There can be mixed media here and there such as charcoal, colored pencil and waxed crayon.

Substrate

Denise paints on cradled hardboard and gessoed canvas. Pieces that are 24x36 inches or smaller, are painted on cradled hardboard 1 inch to 1 1/2 inches deep with paint finished edges matching the overall color scheme of the painting.

Larger pieces on canvas are painted while tacked to a large hardboard frame. This way I can still sand away as much as I want with a hard surface backing the painting.

The painting is then removed and reframed on stretcher bars for a more lightweight finished artwork which is easier to ship and easier to hang.

Finish

All artwork have been finished with a clear gloss or semi gloss water-based acrylic polymer varnish with Ultra Violet Light Stabilizers [UVLS] that protects interior acrylic paintings from dust and ultraviolet light.

In the event that you hang your painting in the dining room and it get splattered with spaghetti sauce (believe me this can happen), the painting can be wiped clean to bring it back to it's intended design.
