"Poppies in a Can — Café du Monde II" fills the panel with coral-orange poppies tumbling out of a vintage coffee can, its hand-lettered "Café Du Monde" label partly hidden behind a green seed pod. The petals are built up in thick, sculptural impasto, each edge traced in pale cream so the blooms read almost like carved relief. Open centers hold small rings of cream stamens around sage-green seed heads, while closed buds and pods drop on curving stems toward the edges. Behind them, a weathered aqua background is scraped back in places to reveal warm cream and flecks of yellow underneath.
This is the second painting built around the Café du Monde can, and it trades the reds of the first for a softer orange-and-aqua palette — warmer and a little quieter. It belongs to a series pairing poppies with vintage tins and labels, the ordinary pantry objects that carry their own kind of memory. The texture is best seen in person, where the raised petal edges catch light across the surface.
Suited to kitchens, dining rooms, or a smaller wall where you want art that feels warm, personal, and alive.

About Original Artwork
Paint Media
Denise paints with archival quality acrylic paints including Golden Acrylic Paints and mediums as well as Nova Paints. There can be mixed media here and there such as charcoal, colored pencil and waxed crayon.
Substrate
Denise paints on cradled hardboard and gessoed canvas. Pieces that are 24x36 inches or smaller, are painted on cradled hardboard 1 inch to 1 1/2 inches deep with paint finished edges matching the overall color scheme of the painting.
Larger pieces on canvas are painted while tacked to a large hardboard frame. This way I can still sand away as much as I want with a hard surface backing the painting.
The painting is then removed and reframed on stretcher bars for a more lightweight finished artwork which is easier to ship and easier to hang.
Finish
All artwork have been finished with a clear gloss or semi gloss water-based acrylic polymer varnish with Ultra Violet Light Stabilizers [UVLS] that protects interior acrylic paintings from dust and ultraviolet light.
In the event that you hang your painting in the dining room and it get splattered with spaghetti sauce (believe me this can happen), the painting can be wiped clean to bring it back to it's intended design.
