An Actor's Muse began with a conversation. The model who sat for this painting spoke at length about her life as an actor — the fears, the anxiety, the particular excitement of a vocation that asks you to inhabit someone else entirely. You could hear that her art was her life. As I painted I found myself wondering about that threshold: what it takes to step into a character, and what remains of yourself when you do.
The painting holds both. A figure stands in full light, direct and present, while a second form — darker, more abstracted — presses in from the right. Whether that shadow is the role waiting to be inhabited, the self being left behind, or something that follows wherever she goes, the painting doesn't say. That ambiguity is the point.
Built on acrylic on a 1/8 inch wood panel, 9×12 inches, with the layered, gestural brushwork characteristic of the Bay Area Figurative tradition. The cool blue ground and flashes of warm yellow and red keep the figure alive against the weight of the shadow beside her.

About Original Artwork
Paint Media
Denise paints with archival quality acrylic paints including Golden Acrylic Paints and mediums as well as Nova Paints. There can be mixed media here and there such as charcoal, colored pencil and waxed crayon.
Substrate
Denise paints on cradled hardboard and gessoed canvas. Pieces that are 24x36 inches or smaller, are painted on cradled hardboard 1 inch to 1 1/2 inches deep with paint finished edges matching the overall color scheme of the painting.
Larger pieces on canvas are painted while tacked to a large hardboard frame. This way I can still sand away as much as I want with a hard surface backing the painting.
The painting is then removed and reframed on stretcher bars for a more lightweight finished artwork which is easier to ship and easier to hang.
Finish
All artwork have been finished with a clear gloss or semi gloss water-based acrylic polymer varnish with Ultra Violet Light Stabilizers [UVLS] that protects interior acrylic paintings from dust and ultraviolet light.
In the event that you hang your painting in the dining room and it get splattered with spaghetti sauce (believe me this can happen), the painting can be wiped clean to bring it back to it's intended design.
